Further to yesterday’s news alert (DP World and MUA Agreement Likely But Other Terminals Still Suffering from Industrial Action) detailing outcomes between DP World and the MUA and the continuing dispute with Patrick and Hutchison terminals Patrick Terminals has released this statement advising that they have applied to the Fair Work Commission seeking to terminate protected action (Patrick asks Fair Work Commission to intervene). They have requested FWC hear their application this week.
The statement goes on to outline the requests of the MUA and the offers of Patricks and some pertinent information relating to current remuneration of workers.
Patrick states that there are 40 container ships caught on the coastline of Australia waiting to berth and that there are delays of 3 weeks in Port Botany and up to a week Melbourne. We all know this to be the case based on the changing arrivals that we have relentlessly seen over the past 6 weeks.
Patrick states there are 90,000 containers being held up as a result of the stop work action effecting the terminals.
The advocacy group for our industry The Freight & Trade Alliance advises that the aim is for normal stevedore operation to commence immediately with both parties to participate in a 21-day intensive bargaining period. At the end of the period FWC to arbitrate on any outstanding matters and both parties have options to appeal through courts of appeal.
The Freight & Trade Alliance/Australian Peak Shippers Association has offered to act as an expert witness to support claims of the significant economic impact of the ongoing action.
